The power of a single moment

One moment, one single moment changing the shape of your entire world. These moments we find in our lives are defining, lifechanging, remembered, stored and reshape everything we do from then on, whether good or bad.

I wanted to take some time to write about this, as in my line of work I talk to people about such moments all the time. I’m not here to talk about my job or what I do, I’m here to talk about the things I’ve come to see through it, the power of human nature, the fear of risk and the strength of love.

If you aren’t sure what sort of moments I’m referring to here, let me paint you a few examples that might help get you in the swing of things. The little line in the window just revealed you’re pregnant, your doctor just sat you down to tell you that you have a life threatening illness, your partner proposes, the first words out of your baby’s mouth is Daddy, or perhaps you just got that dreaded phone call that a loved one is gone. Those moments, not those petty moments that we all end up stressing about everyday, I’m talking about a second in your life where the entire world just stops, you cease to exist in anytime but that second and everything you just knew one moment ago has changed.

When I’m talking to people about their lives, I’m not just listening, I’m feeling. The kind of emotions that people give you when they speak of such times in their lives is empowering. In many ways I feel privileged to be that ear, other times listening to such heart wrenching stuff is hard on the soul and you walk away feeling that suddenly all your problems are pretty pathetic compared to what others are dealing with. But for those who are facing some of life’s biggest trials, I hear one very important thing and it usually begins with ”I wish….”.

I wish I had just said I love you….. I wish I had just put my fears aside and gone for it years ago… I wish I hadn’t wasted so much time…. I wish I had one more day….

Do you know how hard it is on us emotionally when we walk around carrying guilt, pain, or anger? I can tell you from what I’ve seen, it can tear you apart. Can you imagine wanting to say so many things to one person and finding out that tomorrow just ripped away the chance to say it? Trust me, you would beg for one more precious moment. What would it mean to you if your parents, your partner or your best friend said something truely meaningful to you? It could mean absolutely everything. If you had a crystal ball to look into would it really make a difference? I think suddenly you would have the time and the courage to do something different.

So often we sit on the fence getting wrapped up in our daily lives taking tomorrow for granted. Tomorrow we have a long list of things we have to do, tomorrow we don’t have time to sit down for 10 minutes let alone take a whole day to dedicate to something…..or someone. If you are going to do one thing for yourself today, put something really valuable on that to do list.

Make one moment to tell your children how proud you are….look your partner right in the eye and tell them how much they mean to you….take one small moment to call a friend you’ve been neglecting….stop and actually look at the world you live in… remember that not having enough money isn’t half as important as not having enough love.

Stop waiting on tomorrow and do something today, for the power of one single moment is far too great not to. Just simply start living, for yourself and the ones you love.
